Barriers to Biodiversity – Eel pathways enhancement study

Over the past few months, we have been working with our volunteers alongside the Lower Medway IDB to undertake European eel eDNA surveys across a number its watercourses, across the Hoo Peninsula. The project part-funded through the Port of London Authority’s Environment Fund, confirmed the presence of eels at 25 of the 40 sites surveyed and in part identified key structures potentially obstructing upstream migration. The resulting data will be used to guide future eel passage efforts, connectivity improvements and contribute to wider biodiversity objectives across the north Kent marshes.
